YAE to produce 'Little Shop of Horrors'
June 25, 2008
Young Artists Ensemble has announced its 28th annual Teen Summer Musical will be “Little Shop of Horrors,” directed by Michael Fischer, with musical direction by Zach Spencer, running July 18-27 in the Scherr Forum Theatre, a part of the Countrywide Performing Arts Center at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
Little Shop of Horrors” began as a cult classic and quickly became a widely acclaimed and beloved musical with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Music by Alan Menken based on the film by Roger Corman, screenplay by Charles Griffith.
The musical is a beautiful, unexpected love story as two skid row flower shop employees battle a man-eating plant from outer space. The musical was made famous by the 1986 film starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin, and features such classic songs as “Feed Me,” “Downtown,” and “Somewhere That’s Green.”
The Young Artists Ensemble takes on the challenge with a cast of performers all between the ages of 13 and 19. The director intends to pull out all of the stops to make this a truly rocking musical experience. Fischer is especially excited to have cast 18-year-old Thousand Oaks resident Hannah Davey as the voice of the man-eating plant.
Traditionally, the plant is voiced by a deep-bass male, but Davey’s resonant alto promises a whole new twist on this vicious vegetable.
