Company stages adaptation of 'Henry IV'

June 27, 2008

The 12th season of the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival will continue with performances of “Henry IV: The Apprenticeship of Good Prince Hal” from Friday, July 18, through Sunday, July 20, at California Lutheran University.

“Henry IV” will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays through Sundays from July 18 through Aug. 3 in scenic Kingsmen Park.

In an exciting adaptation of Shakespeare's “Henry IV Part 1” and “Part 2” by John Slade, the play follows the adventures of the young man slated to become king and his incorrigible and loveable scoundrel-knight, John Falstaff. Set in the time period in which the characters originally lived, this version captures the comedy, action and poignancy of the source.

Slade is directing “Henry IV” this summer after starring in “King Lear” during last year’s festival. He directed “King Henry V” in 2004 for the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company.

Presented by the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company, the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival is one of the area’s most popular outdoor theatrical events. Visitors are immersed in the Shakespeare experience as festival grounds open at 5:30 p.m. for picnicking and pre-show entertainment with musicians, dancing and comic Shakespearean improvisation.
